Getting around Ibiza in 2026 is not the same as it was a few years ago. The island has introduced vehicle caps limiting the number of tourist and rental cars allowed during summer, Uber is now fully established with three service options, and taxis added a new WhatsApp booking system in 2025. If you are planning a trip in 2026, this guide covers everything you need to know before you arrive.
Ibiza has no trains or metro system. Your options are buses, taxis, Uber, rental cars, or a pre-booked private transfer. Each comes with real advantages and real limitations depending on when you are travelling and where you need to be. We have been operating on the island for years and have helped hundreds of clients get around it, so everything in this guide comes from direct local experience.
One thing worth knowing before we start: if you are visiting between June and September and you want to rent a car, book it as early as possible. Ibiza now legally limits the number of rental cars on the island each day during peak season. We cover exactly what that means in the car rental section below.
Ibiza by Bus
Buses are the cheapest way to get around Ibiza and work well if you are travelling between the main towns during the day. The honest downside: routes can run late in peak season, stops have little to no shade, and services thin out significantly at night. If you are on a tight budget and have flexibility with your time, buses are fine. If you have somewhere specific to be at a specific time, they are not the most reliable option.

Ibiza by Taxi or Uber
Taxis are one of the easiest ways to get around Ibiza, especially at night when buses stop running. You can hail one on the street, find them at ranks in Ibiza Town, San Antonio, Santa Eulalia and the airport, or book ahead by phone or WhatsApp.
Radio Taxi Ibiza is the main service on the island. Call or WhatsApp them on +34 971 33 33 33 (WhatsApp booking available since February 2025, with a €1.45 supplement). You can also use the TaxiClick app to request a cab directly from your phone.
Fares run on a meter. During the day (Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 21:00) you are on Tariff 1 at €1.21 per kilometre with a minimum fare of €4. Nights, weekends and public holidays switch to Tariff 2 at €1.47 per kilometre with a base of €3.75. There is an airport surcharge of €2, and phone or WhatsApp bookings add €1.45.
To give you a rough idea: the airport to Ibiza Town costs around €19 to €22, and the airport to San Antonio runs around €33 to €38, depending on time of day and traffic.
Uber in Ibiza
Uber is fully operational in Ibiza. You can book Uber Black, Uber Comfort or Uber Van depending on your group size and preference. One important thing to know: Spanish regulations require Uber rides to be booked at least 30 minutes in advance, so it does not work as a spontaneous street pickup. As long as you plan a little ahead, it is a reliable and straightforward option, particularly for larger groups or airport transfers.
At Ibiza Secret Picnic, we advise our guests to download the taxi application called Taxiclick, along with Uber, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. On good days (when the demand is not very high), the app should ideally work in the same fashion as Uber app or other transportation apps that you might be used to. In high season, we learned that this is might not be the case.
We usually recommend to our guests to assist them in booking private transportation to and from their luxury picnic. For special occasions such as a romantic wedding proposal picnic or if they have an important dinner reservation or event afterwards, it is advised not to rely on taxis. If you need assistance with private transport in Ibiza, contact us to see if we can help.
Our past experience with calling or ordering a taxi through the app has shown that it may not provide an accurate timeframe for the taxi’s arrival.
The operators often don’t have any further information beyond sending a taxi when it’s available, leaving our guests with no updates or callbacks. We have had instances where we waited with our guests for more than an hour and continuously called for updates.
To ensure that our guests’ unique picnic experience is not overshadowed by transportation delays, we suggest we help you book a private transport with a reliable company that will wait for you at a scheduled time after the picnic, especially if you’re not driving your own rental car.
If you require a taxi from the airport, simply head to the taxi rank outside and queue up for the next available taxi. The general taxi number does not accept bookings for airport pick-ups either.
Apart from the airport, you can find taxi ranks in towns, ports, major hotels, and resorts across the island. These are marked with blue ‘taxi’ signs, and you can walk up to these locations and take a taxi without booking in advance.
During the summer months, it’s possible that taxis may not stop if you try to hail them on the street. This is because they are likely to be headed to the designated taxi ranks.

Rental Cars in Ibiza
Renting a car in Ibiza gives you the most freedom to explore the island at your own pace, from hidden coves to hilltop villages that buses simply do not reach. Most major rental companies operate at Ibiza airport, and there are also local agencies in Ibiza Town, San Antonio and Santa Eulalia.
Book as early as possible if you are visiting in July or August. Summer inventory sells out quickly and last-minute prices can be steep.
The 2025 Vehicle Cap: What You Need to Know
This is something that did not exist a few years ago and catches many visitors off guard. Since 2025, Ibiza limits the number of non-resident vehicles allowed on the island at any one time to 20,168 per day. If that cap is reached, additional vehicles cannot enter until others leave.
The permit system is managed through ibizacircular.es, where you can check availability and register your vehicle in advance if you are bringing a car from the mainland or arriving by ferry with a rental. Fines for non-compliance can reach €30,000, so this is not something to overlook.
If you are flying in and picking up a car at the airport, the rental company handles registration on your behalf. But if you are driving onto the island via ferry, check ibizacircular.es before you travel.
A Few Practical Tips
Petrol stations in rural areas can be sparse, so fill up when you see one. Parking in Ibiza Town and San Antonio in peak season is genuinely difficult. Blue zones require a ticket from the nearest machine, and many areas near the port charge by the hour throughout the day.
Roads outside the main towns are generally narrow and wind through farmland, so if you are planning to explore the north of the island around Sant Joan or Portinatx, take your time.
Credit card for renting a car
First and foremost, you will need a credit card to rent a car with most rental car agencies. Most car rental companies in Ibiza will require a credit card to be presented at the time of rental as a deposit and with at least 1200 – 2000€ available to be put on hold.
If you don’t have one, you may be required to buy the full insurance package or they might even cancel your booking if it is made through a 3rd party. This is because the credit card serves as a form of security for the car rental company in case of any damages or unpaid fines.
Valid Driver’s License
Another important thing to keep in mind when renting a car in Ibiza is to make sure you have a valid driver’s license. If you are younger than 25, you may have to pay an extra fee at the rental desk, depending on which hire company supplies the car.
Affordable and comprehensive option
When it comes to booking a car rental in Ibiza, the most comprehensive option we know of (if you follow the recommendations mentioned here) is booking through the 3rd party website Do You Spain. They offer competitive prices and a wide range of vehicles to choose from.
Please make sure that you select the fuel policy when searching for cars and set it to: full to full. This way, the car rental company will not charge you anything for the fuel, if it is returned with a full tank. If you book through an online reseller like Do You Spain, a valid credit card in the name of the driver is recommended to avoid any extra deposit costs.
Also, it’s important to compare prices and check reviews before making a final booking.
Parking in Ibiza
It’s also important to note that parking can be difficult in certain areas of Ibiza, especially during peak season. If you’re planning on staying in Ibiza Town, for example, it may be more convenient to stay in a hotel with parking or in a nearby area with easier parking options. Parking might cost between €20 – 40€/day or even more. Es Pratet parking, located conveniently behind Burger King in Ibiza Town, offers the advantage of 24/7 access. However, it’s important to note that this convenience comes at a premium, making it one of the most expensive parking options in Ibiza.

Inspect the car
Finally, it’s a good idea to inspect the car thoroughly before you drive off the lot and to take photos of any existing damage. This will help you avoid being charged for any damages that were already there when you received the car.
Renting a car in Ibiza can be a great way to see the island and enjoy all that it has to offer. Just be sure to keep these tips in mind to ensure a hassle-free rental experience.
We hope that this guide helps you navigate the transportation options available on the island of Ibiza and we look forward to welcoming you on the white island.
Important Advisory for Guests: Protect Your Valuables
Recent reports indicate a rise in car thefts across Spain, including Ibiza. Thieves are now using sophisticated electronic devices to unlock cars without causing visible damage. To safeguard your belongings, we strongly advise you not to leave any valuable items in your vehicle. The most targeted areas are the touristic spots such as the parking at Mirador Es Vedra or Cala Comte beach.
Staying Safe Getting Around Ibiza
Ibiza is generally a safe destination, but like any busy tourist island in peak season, it pays to stay switched on.
Unofficial taxis are the most common transport-related issue visitors encounter. Always use licensed taxis with a visible licence plate beginning with PM and a working meter. Drivers who approach you outside clubs or at the port offering flat rates are not always legitimate, and fares can be wildly inflated. Book through Radio Taxi, TaxiClick or Uber to avoid any grey area.
On mopeds and scooters, bag snatching can happen, particularly in busy areas like Playa d’en Bossa and the port in Ibiza Town at night. Keep bags on your lap or wear a crossbody bag with the strap across your chest rather than dangling on one shoulder.
In rental cars, never leave anything visible inside the vehicle. Break-ins at beach car parks do happen, especially in summer. Put everything in the boot before you arrive, not after you park, as opportunists do watch. Do not leave any valuables in the rental cars.
Drink safety is worth mentioning even in a transport context: if you are heading out at night and plan to get a taxi home, decide in advance how you are getting back and keep enough cash or a charged phone for the journey. A lot of people get stranded at 4am when clubs close because they have no plan and no battery.
The emergency number in Spain is 112 and works for police, ambulance and fire services.
